The 2018 “Harmon’s Heart of Baseball Event”

Harmon Killebrew’s legacy of compassion continues with a special event to be held August 25 at Target Field in conjunction with the Twins-Oakland game, to celebrate and advocate for people of all abilities.

Harmon Killebrew was a baseball legend, and off the diamond he was a champion for people with disabilities. He believed everyone has a purpose, and everyone has something to offer. “Harmon’s Heart of Baseball” was created to bring people together – to celebrate, to have fun, and to advocate for people of all abilities.

After his passing in 2011 Nita Killebrew, his wife, set out to establish a legacy for Harmon – to ensure he would be remembered for his love and compassion for people, as well as being a famous baseball player. “Harmon was a man of integrity and a man of compassion. I wanted to create an event to honor Harmon’s legacy and that would remind all of us of what impact we can all have on the lives of others; to smile, and to show love and encouragement to each other,” states Nita.

The funds raised at this event will be used to help provide positive opportunities for people with disabilities through two nonprofits – Productive Alternatives, Inc. and Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Twin Cities.

This day-long celebration is scheduled for Saturday, August 25, 2018, with this itinerary:

  • 11:00 am – 3:00 pm Tailgate Party at the Minnesota Masonic Heritage Center in Bloomington.
  • 4:00 pm Target Field Gates Open
  • 5:30 pm On-Field Program and Harmon’s Heart of Baseball Award Presentation by Nita Killebrew, recognizing a person with disabilities who exemplifies the values and a loving heart like the event’s namesake – Harmon Killebrew.
  • 6:10 pm Twins vs. Oakland Game begins. Kechi Okwuchi, who was a Shriners Hospitals for Children® patient and a finalist on “America’s Got Talent,” is scheduled to sing the national anthem.
