Albert Belle arrested for indecent exposure in Arizona

Albert Belle arrested for indecent exposure and DUIAlbert Belle, 51, the former Cleveland Indian star who played in the majors with the Indians, White Sox and Baltimore Orioles from 1989 until 2000, was known for slugging the long ball and doubles. In 1995, Belle hit 50 home runs and 50 doubles in one of the most amazing years of any MLB player. That season was the first and last time any player has accomplished that feat.

After a DUI and indecent exposure arrest in Arizona Sunday night, Belle will now be better remembered for swinging something other than a baseball bat. A news release on the incident relates: “Upon completion of the on-scene investigation, based upon probable cause, both Mr. Belle and another adult subject were arrested and booked into [Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office] Jail,” the news release continued. “Mr. Belle’s charges include 3 counts of indecent exposure and driving while under the influence.”

When the first headlines were out on the indecent exposure charge without any context, my first thoughts went towards the sexual assault side of things. It turns out that Albert Belle was urinating next to his automobile before leaving the parking lot. As he did so, a group of three people, including a 15 year old girl, saw him relieving himself after an afternoon and evening of heavy drinking which is why he is also charged with extreme DUI (BAC over .8). When the father of the teen girl yelled at him, Belle shook or swung his genitalia.

The reports of the criminal charges against Belle have been fluctuating between 2 charges of indecent exposure to 3 charges. No, we at Zom Baseball will not be looking further into this incident to confirm 2 or 3 charges. You can Google it. We’d rather remember Albert Belle as an awesome batter who wound up with 381 homers in his short career. We know the media and many in baseball detested the guy, but I always hoped for the best with Albert. Here’s to lost hope.

This case has been referred to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s office for possible prosecution. Belle was later released on his own recognizance.
